So how did I actually light up the pic (which wasn’t chosen for the cover, btw….)?
Easy, I used 3 Nikon SB-800 Speedlights, one of the lights (bounced to an umbrella, which was positioned just off my left shoulder pointing downwards, note where the shadow fell lah) were triggered via a Pocket Wizard radio triggering thingies on top of the Nikon D2Xs. The other 2 Speedlights were used for the key/hairlight were positioned slightly behind Datuk Vinod. If I were to just use the zoom function of the flash, even at 105mm the spill will still be great, so I used a homemade snoot on the flash for a tighter beam. I want the keylight ‘just so’, if you know what I mean *wink*. But Man proposed and God disposed (or something similar, I think I heard about the said idioms during the last Century and I can’t oso remembered it was spoken by whom lah) noticed the ‘extra’ keylight on the right side of the camera? Datuk Vinod moved just a tad during the shoot.
And how do I triggered the other 2 Speedlights? Well, they were triggered by the light from the umbrella via the built in slave unit (SU-4 mode in Nikon speak) which is similar in function with my old SB-26 unit.
What I light like about my Speedlights is that I can use them with my Sony Alphas and my Horseman VH-R cam by using the supplied cable thingies that can be connected from camera to the PW.
Nice for location shoot when I don’t want to lug around heavy studio strobes heh heh heh. On the negative side I lose a lot of effective f-stop (no way I can light up a subject in broad daylight if I want to use an aperture of f/11) AND the recyling time took longer once I pop off a few shots at full power.
You to got to weight the pros and cons la. C’est la vie…
On a personal note, you might noticed the gap between posting on this blog. What to do lah, as much as I like to make myself heard (yea, me and a billion others on this planet hehehehe) I gotta feed the Family and pay some bills. Quite a few bill actually hah! Well in order to do that, I gotta go out and do some actual work.
So what lah I’ve been up to?
I still help out the Mac dewd covering the ICC Under-19 World Cup Cricket till this Friday, then I’m off to join a TV production crew. But last weekend I wasn’t here helping th eMac dewd out, as I was elsewhere dong some work for the said TV Production.
And what’s the production is all about? Well just watch this space often lah *grins*
