Will an umbrella make you light softer? Part 2.

Written by Tedadnan on February 1st, 2008

Continuing from this article here (Will an umbrella makes your light softer?) here’s a photoshoot that I did with the talented Ms Julia yesterday.

Ariffin and I scouted this location a few days ago, while the building has no roof (no direct sunlight in mornings and evenings) if we timed it just right the place is perfect for what I’ve had in mind, if it doesn’t rain lah that is *wink*

My approach to the shoot is to shoot with as minimal equipment as possible. Tho I love my studio strobes they’re just plain heavy and bulky. I hate lugging around heavy stuff on my back (I am not as young as I used to be lerr…). So out came the Sb-800 speedlights units lah *grins*

‘Julia and the Butterfly…’

Model: Julia Ziegler
Dress: Arma Abdul Rahman Wedding & Couture, Make-up: Dwan Ismael
Photography & Art Direction: Ted Adnan

I used just one Nikon SB-800 Speedlight attached with a Pocket Wizard radio transmitter (darn expensive piece of plastic I ever bought, the Made-in-China ones are just plain unreliable!) on silk umbrella bounced toward the model. The umbrella was positioned just out of view on camera left, pointing downwards.

More post work was done on the Mac™ oh yea!

‘Pensive…’

For ‘Pensive‘, I light Ms Julia with a Nikon SB-800 Speedlights bounced off a silk umbrella, the Speedlight was triggered by a Pocket Wizard radio transmitter attached to the Sony Alpha DSLR A700.

The umbrella was positioned just out of view on camera right, pointing downwards. Another umbrella was used as keylight, behind the wall on camera reft. Note the highlights on the right part face of the face lah.

The talented Ms Julia site is here lah.

Hey what’s that video dewd doing there?

I am producing a video of the whole process for my own personal references. Maybe if I see myself in action (how’s that for narcissim?) I can spot what I missed, or I just can improve on my workflow.

Or maybe I just make some DVD so I can distribute it to past and future workshop participants *hint hint*.

Watching a video sure beats making notes on your own no?

P.S. The video crew were joking about releasing a video about ‘the behind the scenes of the behind the scenes footage of the making of Ted Adnan’s photoshoot with Ms Julia – Directors Cut, Unedited’.

*LOL*

    SWEEEEEET.

Eh did you know the SB-800 in SU-4 mode works with Sony dSLRs in wireless mode? It somehow ignores the preflashes and signals.

    Heya Ted,

I was wondering what are the differences when you bounce the light to silk umbrella to light up the subject, and sometimes i see you place the plain white umbrella against the flash? If you could brief in a nutshell. Thanks.

    Cheers.

  11. ted says:

Well Faris dewd, in a nutshell, silk shoot-thru umbrellas are generally softer than white umbrellas.
