At the Ruel Tafalla’s Photography Bootcamp feat. Ted Adnan “Strobist” Workshop

Written by Tedadnan on September 9th, 2010

I met Mr Ruel Tafalla when I visited the Phillipines earlier this year. After corresponding a few times thru Facebook™ and tagging each other in many, many photos (LOL!) we finally settled on a date for me to teach a “Strobist” lighting workshop under Ruel Tafalla’s Photography Bootcamp banner.

Ruel's workshop Tees! I loike...

We started with studio lighting basics. I insist on having this module both as theory and practical so that later when we go outdoors for the “strobist” workshop everyone has an understanding on where to place their lights in relation to the subject, the background and the Sun. More on that bit later lah…

setting up a light...

The participants learns to know the effect of using a light modifiers, pictured here a softbox, effect on the Quality of studio light..

I demo a few "kung-fu" stances during the studio lighting workshop part of Ruel Tafalla's Photography Bootcamp lah... BTS photo by Marv Pizarro

...right after my "kung-fu stances" demo, it's the participants turn to practice a few moves of their own... BTS photo by Marv Pizarro

Mr Bertong, Mr Handy To and Mr Mr Ned (his name rhymes with mine, "Ted" hahah) striking a pose...

After the “Strobist” session outdoors we had a review session, I asked everyone to select 2 of their best shots and gave a critique on how to improve the image. If I like the image at the back of the LCD screen I shared with everyone why I like it. I hope everyone who were present learnt more from the critique session lah.

The "photo tearing" session at the end of the "strobist" workshop. Fortunately the cameras all survives lah...

last but not least, the obligatory group photo of the participants and sponsors reps and talents, thank you all!

The obligatory group photo of participants, MUA and participants!

Mr Ruel and I would like to thanks our sponsors for their kind support, Mr Handy To of ABACUS Microcomputers for the projector and Wacom CINTIQ usage, APERTURE Trading for the use of RIME 400w/s and 600 w/s Studio Lights in the Studio Lighting basic part of the workshop, Burgundy Realty Corp for venue of the workshop and accomodation for yours truly, Mr Albert Figueras for his fashion creation, Ms Sara Bacani for the MUA services and last, but not least *winks*, the talented Mr Lambert Panglinan for the video documentation lah

Direct flash with Canon G11 oso Boleh! (aka At the AstroSHAW/Tayangan Unggul Majlis Berbuka Puasa Dinner 2010 lah)

Written by Tedadnan on September 5th, 2010

From time to time I worked with film companies in Malaysia providing still photography coverage for their production. My movie credits (as a still photographer lah, not as an actor hehehe) was with Mr Afdlin Shauki first directorial debut “Buli” back in 2004…

Mr Afdlin Shauki has the floor...

and “Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang” which was directed by Mr Mamat Khalid in 2007 and was released in 2008. “Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang” was shot entirely in Black & white film stock, the first time in decades a Malay film was ever shot in B&W again.

Mr Mamat Khalid a the rostrum...

Notice the “first” that I mentioned? I like working with “first” & “something special”. “Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang” is special to me coz I just loved the whole feel of the “noir” film genre and to see Mr Rosyam Nor in action. Heheh bunyi macham masuk bakul angkat sendiri, no? *winks*

Well, in between the film productions that I’ve mentioned I also involved with quite a few TV productions thru a producer friend of mine in TV3, that will be another entry lah. I like working in productions, I get to meet new friends that way :D :D :D

Speaking of friends (no, not the one in Facebook, hose are “Friends”, if you know what I mean *winks*), at the AstroSHAW/Tayangan Unggul Majlis Berbuka Puasa Dinner 2010 I met a few old friends, some dating vack from my studio assistant days back when I was one in a studio in Ampang Point area. Wah lao, small World isn’t it? Good lah to see you guys again, your tummy is an indicator of how “prosperous” you are isn’t it? *rubbing my own tummy absent_mindedly while typing this paragraph…)

I’ve met a few old friends that I made during assignments. One set of friends in particular I met during my days as Official Photographer for KL Tower BASE Jump from 2005~2008 (or thereabouts)..

Me with Ms Anita & Mr Irafazir

My highlights of the evening apart from “All You can eat Buffet” at JW Marriot Putrajaya (only pay for Rm6.00 per entry parking, Nais. A mere 15 minutes drive via SKVE from my house in Kajang, no jam some more!) catered by AstroSHAW/Tayangan Unggul when Mr Mamat Khalid spend sometime chatting with me lah.

Enche' Mamat Khalid and yours truly, we were both directly flashed with a Canon G11 compact ajer...

Oh, did I mentioned that all photos were taken with a Canon compact G11 with it’s built in flash? At ISO800~1600 it’s super grainy but for web use enough la. Who says direct flash technique is no good? *winks*
