At the Taal fashion workshop with Raymond Isaac & Kevin Ames…

Written by Tedadnan on February 9th, 2010

One of the things that I re-learnt in the Taal fashion workshop in Taal Batangas in the Phillipines is..

…there is no rules in fashion photography. You can act-cheer-ly  apply that erm, rules, for photography in general. You probably heard or even ‘read’ about the so call Rules of Photography . You might heard or even read about  ’The Rules (here we go again!) of Third”, “The Golden Mean”, “Symmetrical balance”, “Asymmetrical balance”, “Golden section”, “Framing”, “Subject Placement” and so on and so forth (oh, go on, Go google them up lah). Sure, you can break them, but before you do, go learn all of these rules and then make your own.

But if you break the rules and you show the work to me and I think it’s crap then I say so lah whoah ahahahahahah.

*ahem*

Back to the above picutre. I didnt set-up this shot, Raymond Isaac who conducted the session used only a hot tungsten light with no diffuser and no light modifier at all and just pointed it at Girlie, the model, and we’re just snapped away, all 20 of us!

The colour was very orangey (as I habitually set my Kelvin temparatures @ 5000K) hence I toned it down in PS during ACR. Good thing I shoot BOTH RAW (for editing) and (small) jpeg (for preview on screen and viewing on the Epson P2500 HD Image Viewer. Dontch buy it, it’s expensive!) so I’m saved!

The vignette is due to the light coverage which ngam-ngam kena Girlie and a bit of the Wall not added in PS lah.

Erm, what’s da correlation between what I just typed above and ‘lighting’?

Well, simply put, lampu tungsten pun BOLEH!

Just make sure you shoot in RAW lah…

At the Joe McNally photo talk earlier today…

Written by Tedadnan on February 7th, 2010

While I was in the Philippines last week, I joined a Fashion Photography Workshop  held @ Taal near Batangas about 3 hours bus ride south of Manila. I learnt a lot of tips on fashion photography and both the trainers Mr Raymund Isaac and Mr Kevin Ames refreshes my memories on lighting fundamentals. You know, stuff that I know all along but I didnt practice as I dontch used them much? That’s why, whenever I have the time, I like to teach lighting to anyone who is willing to learn. I forced myself to re-learn the basics EVERY single time I teach a new batch of eager students *wah! self promotion and marketing kaw-kaw si Ted Adnan ni whoah hahahahahah* Anyway, back to Joe McNally seminar *you never notice how uncomfortable banquet chairs are, until you had to sit on them (with very short tea break I must hasten to add!) all day long*.

Dammit, my mind is ‘young(-ish) but my body feels so old ady (sumtimes, especially when sits on banquet chairs all day long *laffs*).

Eh, where was I? Oh!

Anyway, back to JoeMcNally seminar (you know, a bunch of people sitting in a room quietly to listen to a speaker upfront doing his stuff), even tho I hadn’t ACT-CHEER-LY join any of his excellent workshops, he refreshes my memory AND I learnt a new tricks or two about using Nikon Speedlights wirelessly. Wah! Last time I mentioned Sony Alpha DSLR quite a bit in this blog here now I am singing the praises of Nikon. Well, it’s all marketing I’m telling you.

If you follow my tweet @tedadnan you can read some of my commentaries #joeinkl there lah.

I bought the books wrote by Mr Joe McNally, and thanks to the excellent effort of Mr Louis Pang and his hardworking team, I finally got to see and attend his lighting seminar in person. Take a bow Mr Louis Pang dewd and team, speaking collectively on behalf of people who attended todays seminar, you have our sincere “Thanks”, a job well done.

Anyhow, I took a few pictures of the event but dontch feel like posting them up yet, instead I wanna see how lah this blog looks like with a new FREE wordpress template (after all, we Malaysian loves free stuff. Checkout fotopages *LOL!* and fesbuk ajer lah to see what I mean ahahahaha). The header pictures are not mine tho lesse what ‘tweaks’ I can (or rather, me web hosting admin dewd) conjures lah to insert me own pictures :D

Sure beat the previous lay-out….

…which IMHO tarak style at all, no? *winks*

Back from the Philippines..

Written by Tedadnan on February 5th, 2010

I just got back from the Philippines yesterday lah (note to self: lain kali mau pergi Manila naik MAS terus ke Lapangan Airport Ninoy Aquino. Airasia dan Cebu Pacific Airway landing kat Desdo Macapagal lebih kurang 80km masuk highway dia amik masa 3 jam ajer sebab jalan banyak JEM!!!) still tired.

But sharing is caring and as such I wanna share this image which was made in Taal (2~3 hours bus ride, depending on traffic jugak
!) just before we board our bus back to Makati, Manila…

School's Out! A student from a Catholic School in Taal, Batangas, The Phillipines...

The above pic was taken with a preset WB (I like to use Kelvin a lot rather than AWB even tho I shoot in RAW) so the out of camera jpegs were waaaay to orangey for my liking. With a little tweak I bring the ‘warmness” (is there such a word?) down a wee bit and leave the orangey colours just so to match my memory of the scene. It was late afternoon and the sun was shining bright coming from behind me (check out the shadows lerrr) and as the school girl was walking facing west (where the sun is setting, if you dontch figures that out yet lah..) the light appears to lit her ‘frontally’ even tho the sun is coming from the side (if facing North or South at thsi time lah). Those of you who attended my ‘Cakap-cakap Fotografi Ted Adnan feat. Si Polan Bin Si Polan’ will remember about side light, front light, top light and 99 percent of our light source comes from the sun and such lah.

Dontch forget about the bestest time for photography is anytime before sunrise right till 9~10am (kalau dah setinggi pokok kelapa tu maknanya masa untuk 2nd breakfast) and 3pm onwards right till sundown (kalau tak perchaya kalu baik nkorang chuba try test tengok sendiri).

Did I make sense? I didnt? If you’re confused then it’s my fault lah (*laffs*)

Been away for a week is waay too long in Innernet time, I update my twitter and fesbuk status (intermittently) with my Blackberry with the hotel WIFI connection ajer. Gotta catch up with e-mails correspondence (carik makan in commercial photography entails A LOT of paperwork and correspondence I’m telling you..) and such lah this coming few days and gotta make arrangement for the coming lighting workshop planned for KL area oso and to make new presentation for a coming phototalk for a skool photography club. Busy days ahead…

Oh, I am still looking for a FREE photography themed word press for this lighting blog (with bad grammar) and such lah so bear wih me for a wee bit with this current theme (buruk bebenor whoah hahahah)
